ABOUT SCROLLS OF CANDY

Scrolls of Candy was made especially for #CandyJam, hosted by itch.io and placed in the top 50. You can find the jam entry here.

#CandyJam was a game jam from early 2014, in solidarity of a few games that had been legally pursued by King.com for using the words “candy” and “saga” in their name.

Scrolls of Candy is a mash-up of Bejeweled, Puzzle Fighter and Rock Paper Scissors, set against the soon to be historical drama of King.com’s trademark-gate in 2014. Assume the role of Candolf, Candy Wizard Extraordinaire, and face off against the best Lawyers the evil King Dotcom can afford in brutal one-on-one matching-puzzle-magic-combat. Can you find the Apple of Memories and restore order in a land where trademark law has gone insane?

The majority of work for this game was done within a week, using GameMaker: Studio and Photoshop. If you’re interested in reading the post-mortem for this game, you can find it on the blog here.

INSTRUCTIONS

When it’s your turn, click on one of the candies in the scroll section of the screen and consume all of the matching adjacent candies. Then, your opponent will click on a different batch of candies. Whoever consumed the most candies wins the clash.

If the winner was an attacker, they do damage to the loser depending on how many more candies they consumed. If they were a defender, no damage happens and they now become the attacker.

Candies get a double bonus against other candies, depending on how many types of candies are in the level. A chart on the top left side of the screen will show what what candy beats each other candy.

Players only have a short amount of time to pick a candy. If they fail to pick one, they forfeit the clash. The player wins when they reduce their opponents health to zero. When the player loses all their health, they lose.
